It’s a shocking event that is used to justify new authoritarian tendencies while seeking vengeance and justice. This time it is not just the political elites seeking to consolidate their power and abuse the constitution. It is the regular people rallying round the flag to avenge Charlie’s murder. Literally. They created this website called “Charlie’s Murderers”. The website invites you to look up the names of people supposedly supporting political violence. And it just keeps scrolling forever, giving you names of people you’ve never heard of. Because these aren’t public personalities but rather private individuals expressing themselves on social media about their feelings on Charlie’s death and legacy. Some of these people listed here hold genuinely disgusting views, celebrating the violent act, even condoning it in various innuendos. They all contain full names, employer information, screenshots of social media profiles and accounts, location information and “other identifying information”. It’s a terrifying website. Especially now that it claims to hold over 50,000 profiles that they are assembling into a searchable public database. The website is entirely crowdsourced – meaning anyone can submit information, and if it contains full identities, it will be published. The goal is to get all of these people fired from their jobs so that they face societal consequences for their legally protected speech. The author’s intention is clear – if there is a name on this website, it means they participated in political violence. It’s called Charlie’s Murderers – so everyone here is complicit and deserves to be doxxed so that they are harassed by online mobs and fired from their jobs. But I am going to show you that this website does a terrible job at vetting the posts for actual political violence and filtering out statements of mere political disagreement with Charlie Kirk’s opinions. And the submissions aren’t just from public accounts but they come from private posts, comments, likes and in some instances, even private chats. I also want to bring to your attention that none of these screenshots mean anything here. They don’t lead to any links and there are no real archives. It is trivially easy to fake a screenshot. I can do it right here and make anyone say anything. All you need is to go to your browser and press F12. You pick an element with the text of the post and simply change it to whatever you want to. For as long as you don’t refresh the page, you can make reality whatever you want it to be and disseminate it everywhere. And chances are most dopamine-addicted people on constant scrolling cycles will not stop to investigate whether it’s actually real or not. It is very clear what the attempt here is. It is not a neutral effort to root out political violence – the goal is to create a chilling effect on any rhetoric remotely critical of the political legacy of Charlie Kirk. They are using privacy as a weapon against free speech. This doxxing effort is encouraging the revenge-seeking crowd to take it a step further. Like they already did with Rachel Gilmore – to find her full address, the street where she lives in. To send her credible death threats for merely appearing on a website not for violent speech, but peaceful disagreement.
