        Chronic pain. Man, I hate it so much. I’ve got a long list of health issues that have been gradually stacking up since high school. Injury after injury and other struggles have landed me physically unable to do what I used to love so much, like playing sports, going for a run, or riding my bike. I’d give up a lot if I could run around and play soccer with my son like I used to. Maybe you’re in the same boat (or worse).

All I can say is I know what it’s like to feel hopeless about it ever getting better and what it’s like to feel alone in prayer when you’ve asked God for the thousandth time for the pain to go away. It can be a dark place to live.

I didn’t write “Anywhere” as someone “on the other side” of this struggle or as someone who can say, “Look, God healed me, he heard my cries, etc.…” I’m a believer living in the tension of trying to do just that—believe that God is working this for my good, even when it feels like he doesn’t care or isn’t there. 

I’ve spent many nights wishing I were “anywhere but here.” In many ways, that’s what this new album is about.

But I’m trying (emphasis on trying) to think this way: if infinite wisdom has decided that this path is the best one for me, wherever that lands me... if where I am is for my good or the good of others, then I’m trying to let my prayer become “don’t take me anywhere but here.”

Ps. At our concerts I’ve talked about this song in relation to a tragedy I experienced last year. “Anywhere” song has become more meaningful since I originally wrote it about chronic pain. I’ll likely talk about that more in the future with different songs coming out later this year.
